FAQs
The questions people ask before starting therapy.
The practical ones, answered properly rather than evasively: how long this takes, whether there is an office to come to, what online sessions are actually like and where you have to be for them, what it costs, and what stays between us.
If your question is not here, ask it in the call.
Frequently asked questions
Getting started
How do I get started?
Send the form on the contact page with your name, your email, and whether you are looking for individual or couples therapy. I reply to arrange a free 30-minute consultation. If you would rather write to me directly, the email address is on the same page.
How long will therapy take?
Longer than a few weeks, and I would rather say that now than after you have invested six sessions expecting a finish line. This is longer-term, depth-oriented work, so months is a realistic frame. We review the work as it goes, and you are never locked into a fixed number of sessions or a package.
How do I know if we are a good fit?
You do not have to decide from a website. The free consultation exists for exactly this: you hear how I talk, ask anything you like, and then choose. If I do not think I am the right person for what you are bringing, I will say so and help you find someone who is. A good referral out is an outcome, not a rejection.
Sessions and format
Where is your office?
There is not one. Every session is online by secure video, and that is deliberate rather than a compromise: no waiting room, no commute, and no chance of meeting someone you know in the corridor. I ask that people not turn up anywhere expecting to meet me, because there is nowhere to turn up.
Do you work weekends?
No. I offer weekday daytime and evening appointments, and I keep weekends for my family. If weekday evenings are the only window you have, that usually works, and it is worth saying so in your first message so we can match times early.
How long are sessions, and how often will we meet?
50 minutes. Weekly to begin with is the norm, and for couples it is close to essential early on. After there is some traction, many people move to every other week and then to occasional check-ins. Nothing about the schedule is fixed, and we can change it as your life changes.
What platform do you use, and what do I need for a session?
Sessions run through a secure, HIPAA-compliant SimplePractice video portal. You get a private link before each session and you do not need to install an app or create an account if you would rather not. A quiet room, headphones if there are people nearby, and a reasonable internet connection are genuinely all you need.
Fees and insurance
How much does a session cost?
$275 for a 50-minute session, and the same rate whether you come as an individual or as a couple. The 30-minute consultation is free. Payment is due at the time of the session and is collected through the SimplePractice client portal.
Do you take insurance?
Not directly. I am an out-of-network provider, which means you pay me and then claim from your insurer if your plan allows it. I provide a superbill on request with the codes your plan needs. Call the number on your card and ask about out-of-network mental health benefits, because the answer varies far more between plans than people expect.
Do you offer a reduced fee?
I keep a small number of reduced-fee places for clients for whom the standard rate is a real barrier. Ask in your first message rather than after several sessions, since the places are limited and I would rather have that conversation before you have paid full rate three times.
Privacy and boundaries
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. What you say in session stays between us, with a short list of legal exceptions that I walk through with you before we start: a serious risk of harm to you or another person, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or a vulnerable adult, and a court order. In couples work I am also clear from the first session about how I handle anything shared with me individually.
Is this for crisis?
No, and please read this part carefully. This is outpatient therapy for people who are functioning day to day, even if it costs them. It is not a crisis service and I am not reachable around the clock. If you are in immediate danger or in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
Are you a Christian counselor, and do I have to be?
I am a Christian, and for clients who want it, therapy can include reflection on faith and spirituality. That is client-led: I do not raise it if you do not. I work with people of other beliefs and no belief at all, and the therapy looks the same from the outside. There is room here for doubt and frustration as much as for certainty.
What if we already know each other?
Then I probably cannot work with you, and I will say so rather than take the appointment. Therapy depends on you being able to say anything, and that is much harder when we might see each other at church, at school, or at a family gathering. The same applies to close friends and family of someone I am already seeing. I will happily help you find someone good.
Something still unanswered? Ask it in a free 30-minute consultation. If you only want the short version, the fees page has the numbers, the about page has the credentials, and the services page shows what each kind of session is for. For anything you send through this website, the privacy policy explains what happens to it.
Ask me the awkward question directly.
The free 30-minute consultation is the place for the ones a website cannot answer: whether I have worked with your situation, whether I am the right kind of therapist for you, and what happens next.
