Insurance and superbills

I am an out-of-network provider and I do not bill insurance directly. If you have out-of-network benefits, I will send a superbill on request: an itemized receipt with the dates, the service codes and the diagnosis information your plan needs in order to consider reimbursement.

Reimbursement depends entirely on your plan, so it is worth calling the number on your card before we start and asking three questions: do I have out-of-network mental health benefits, what is my deductible, and what percentage is covered once it is met.

Payment

Payment is due at the time of the session, collected securely through the SimplePractice client portal. Major credit cards, debit cards, and HSA or FSA cards are all accepted.

If paying by HSA or FSA card, check with your plan administrator first: therapy is usually a covered expense, but they set the rules.

Cancellations and missed sessions

Your session time is held for you, so a cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice, or a missed session, is charged in full. If something genuinely unavoidable comes up, tell me and we will sort it out.

Life happens. If something genuinely unavoidable comes up, tell me and we will work it out.

Reduced-fee places

I keep a small number of reduced-fee places each year for clients for whom the standard rate is a real barrier. If cost is the thing standing between you and starting, ask. It is a normal question and not an awkward one.

Because the number of places is limited, tell me in your first message rather than after several sessions.

What $275 a session is buying.

Therapy at this rate is not the cheapest way to talk about your week. It is a licensed therapist with fourteen years of experience, a small caseload, and the ability to hold a long conversation across months rather than restart it every time. You are paying for continuity, preparation outside the hour, and someone who is keeping track of the arc of your work without you having to.

Fewer sessions done well is a better deal than many done thinly, which is why I do not sell bundles or promise a fixed number of sessions. If the rate is a genuine obstacle, the reduced-fee conversation exists exactly for that, and asking costs you nothing.

The consultation is free because I would rather find out early that we are not a fit than take your money to discover it later. If I am not the right person for what you are bringing, I will say so and point you toward someone better.

What is a superbill, what happens if I cancel, and whether any of this is covered. All answered in plain language.

What exactly is a superbill?

A receipt formatted the way insurance companies expect: my license details, the dates of service, the procedure codes and a diagnosis code. You pay me, submit the superbill to your insurer, and they reimburse you directly according to your out-of-network benefits. I provide one on request, usually monthly or per session, whichever is easier for your plan.

Do you take HSA or FSA cards?

Yes, through the client portal. I am not able to tell you whether your particular plan allows it, and rules vary between administrators, so it is worth a quick check with them before your first session.

Is there any way to pay less than $275?

Possibly. I hold a small number of reduced-fee places, and people are also sometimes reimbursed a meaningful amount through out-of-network benefits, which brings the effective cost down. Ask me in your first message and we can talk about both honestly.

Longer answers on the FAQ page, including what happens if you need a higher level of care than I can provide. If you want the credentials behind the rate, the about page lists them in full, and the services page shows what each kind of session is for.

The consultation is free for a reason.

Thirty minutes to ask about fees, insurance, availability, or anything else that is standing between you and starting.
